Harmful algal bloom and aquatic weeds data from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, collected to evaluate the impact of the 2021 Temporary Urgency Change Order and Emergency Drought Barrier

Condition 8 of the June 2021 Temporary Urgency Change Order for the Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP) requires a special study of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta (Delta) and the spread of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV), and floating aquatic vegetation (FAV), also referred to as “aquatic weeds”. A report on the study was submitted to the State Water Resources Control Board on June 1, 2022. This data package contains all publicly available data used in the report, including visual cyanobacteria reports, cyanotoxin data, water quality, nutrients, flow/hydrodynamics, chlorophyll-a concentrations, temperature, coverage of SAV and FAV, use of herbicides, and human populations. Many of these data were derived from other datasets, though some were collected specifically for this study ## About This Federated Record This CNRA Open Data Platform record is based on metadata federated from the Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) Data Portal. Its purpose is to improve the discoverability of the data package through the CNRA Open Data Platform. The EDI Data Portal is the repository of record for this data package. Metadata, resource links, and supporting information displayed here may not reflect the latest updates available in EDI. Resources shown here—including Full Metadata, Provenance, and Data Quality Report—are provided to help users understand and evaluate the data package and the supporting information available from EDI. For the current data package, citation, DOI, data files, metadata, provenance, data quality documentation, revision history, and other supporting information, refer to the EDI data package landing page: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/metadataviewer?packageid=edi.1337.2&key=vqSpNwnbe91Bi8trB5RY25CoPD4 Access requirements, permissions, and authorization policies for resources hosted by EDI are established and managed independently of the CNRA Open Data Platform.

Daily Air Temperature

A data set containing daily average air temperatures and degree days above 19 degrees Celsius for the region near the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta) from 2015-2021. Values are based on averages of three continuous weather observation stations located near the Delta: San Joaquin River McCune station (SJR), Harvey O' Banks Pumping Plant (HBP), and San Joaquin River at Mossdale (MSD).

Discrete Nutrients and Chlorophyll

A data set containing concentrations of chlorophyll-a and three nutrient parameters (Dissolved Ammonia, Dissolved Nitrate + Nitrite, and Dissolved Ortho-phosphate) in water samples collected at various locations in the San Francisco Estuary (Delta) east of Chipps Island for 2014-2021.

Continuous Water Quality

A data set containing daily averages of various continuous water quality parameters measured in the water in-situ at the stations near Franks Tract located in the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta). Water quality parameters include Dissolved Oxygen, pH, and Chlorophyll Fluorescence. Data was collected by DWR and USGS from 2015-2021.

Daily water tempertaure

A data set containing daily average water temperatures and degree days above 19 degrees Celsius for the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta) from 2015-2021. Values are based on averages of six continuous water quality stations located in the Central and Southern Delta: False River near Oakley (FAL), Middle River near Holt (HLT), Holland Cut near Bethel Island (HOL), Middle River at Middle River (MDM), Old River at Quimbly (ORQ), and Old River at Franks Tract near Terminous (OSJ).

Cyanobacteria Satellite data

A data set containing counts of pixel values derived from HAB satellite data within 4 Cyano Index categories for four open water regions in the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta): Franks Tract, Mildred Island, Clifton Court Forebay, and Liberty Island. Summary statistics cover the summer through fall (June-Oct) in 2019-2021. The Cyano Index categories (Low, Moderate, High, and Very High) were based on WHO recreational guidance level thresholds. The data set also includes counts of pixels that were below the detection limit for the imagery processing method and counts of pixels that were either invalid or missing.

HAB Incident Reports

A data set containing CyanoHAB incident reports in the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta) in 2021. Most of this data is from the State Water Board's HAB Incident Report Map. This is combined with the maximum advisory levels for Microcystins that occurred at each station in 2021 from the cyanotoxin concentration data in the Cyanotoxins table. The advisory levels were developed by the California Cyanobacteria and Harmful Algal Bloom Network (CCHAB).

Cyanotoxins

A data set containing Cyanotoxin concentrations in whole-water grab samples collected at various locations in the upper San Francisco Estuary (Delta). The majority of the available cyanotoxin data was collected in 2021, so this data set only includes data from 2021 for all stations except for Big Break Regional Shoreline. Big Break has a longer monitoring history, so all data collected at this location from 2015–2021 are included in this data set.
