Interagency Ecological Program: Delta Smelt Diet Data collected in the San Francisco Estuary

The integrated dataset presented here includes diets of morphologically identified Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), both of wild and culture (hatchery) origin, from the San Francisco Estuary (SFE) utilizing samples collected by nine separate field monitoring projects with their associated catch and environmental data. Data is compiled from two directed studies from the Interagency Ecological Program’s Diet and Condition Study (Diet Study) conducted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Diet Study has been conducted since 2005 and examines the stomach contents of young pelagic fishes in the SFE. In 2011, the Diet Study began working with the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to process Delta Smelt in collaboration with the Aquatic Health Program (AHP) and the Otolith Geochemistry & Fish Ecology Laboratory (OGFL) to pair measurements of multiple health metrics for each fish. In 2017, the Study started collaborating with the Directed Outflow Project (DOP) to process Delta Smelt collected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Enhanced Delta Smelt Monitoring (EDSM) program. Fish are collected by several CDFW and USFWS fish monitoring projects, preserved, and transferred to UC Davis where the fish are measured, weighed, and dissected. The guts are then transferred to Diet Study staff where stomach contents are enumerated and identified to the lowest possible taxon. Here we present Delta Smelt diet by number data, paired with environmental variables, conversion factors to convert diet by number to diet by weight, and calculated gut fullness values from 2011 onward.
