This project will inventory agricultural lands across jurisdictional boundaries, prioritize the most highly productive and critically threatened lands, coordinate management across jurisdictions, and develop mitigation strategies to balance grazing operations with improvement of natural resources such as wildlife habitat.  It will protect identify specific mitigations, tools and strategies based on inventory data; followed by interagency coordination to seek mutual benefits between agricultural operations and resource conservation.  

The strategy will supplement existing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the loss of agricultural land as identified under Butte County’s Climate Action Plan, and as proposed under the County’s active Agriculture Mitigation Ordinance effort. It will coordinate current strategies (General Plan, Draft Agricultural Mitigation Ordinance, Agriculture Overlay Zone, etc.), as well as develop new strategies to protect, maintain, and enhance agricultural land in Butte County. 

Mendocino County’s primary project goals are to increase Williamson Act Contracts on Important Farmland, increase the capacity of local land trusts and agricultural conservation easements programs, prioritize conservation easement acquisitions, and educate the agricultural community about agricultural land conservation programs.

The project will develop a community-based Rotational Cover Crop Plan for Pajaro Valley to improve the long term viability of local agriculture.  The cover crop strategy will establish a target number of acres of agricultural land within the valley to be voluntarily set aside each year and put into tillage and/or cover crop temporarily.  This strategy will keep the most productive land in production, and prioritize the lesser productive lands into voluntary rotational fallowing.

The project will create a collaborative and comprehensive strategy to prevent conversion of critical agricultural lands as a key approach to climate action.  The County proposes to incorporate mapping, modeling and a policy framework into one comprehensive and collaborative approach that brings together key stakeholders to focus on this critical goal.
